how do you join a sea battle?

When another player is already in combat with an enemy? I think I must have missed this in the tutorial!

If it is a ship battle you just select the enemy ship and fire on it as normal.

If it is a deck battle you approach and press 'x' (the option should appear at the foot of your screen when you are close enough).

Thanks I seem to have trouble joining the battle when another player is firing on a enemy ship. I can only sail around them. Do I click on the enemy ship?
