Render Distance acting up?

I just stared playing this game again, and my render distance is absolutely HORRID! i can't see what i have to fight or talk to until i'm right up to them and it's even worse for names. and in ship fights it makes me get pulled into a mob fight. Is there any way i can make my render distance farther away???
