Gene pool?

Hi, I normally don't hatch pets often, since I have "okay" pets.
But I hatched with someone who wanted my pets grant (forgot what it was), but as soon as the new pet hatched he said that it had the talent in it's gene pool.
So, how can you tell what's in a pet's gene pool?

Your grant may have been the only talent/power of that level between either of your pets. Since the pets don't produce anything one of their parents didn't have, it'd be easy enough to tell.
