ctrl-r Auto Run

When I press ctrl-r for Auto Run, the Chat Window opens up for entering text. Until I close the text enter portion of the Chat Window, I can not direct my pirate where I want him to go which almost makes Auto Run useless. It was my understanding that only pressing 'o' or the Enter Key would open the Chat Window for talking.
