THe standard affair in some games like FInal Fantasy Tactics could work here. lees damage attacking front, average on side, and more on back. It could be one specific spell, or a whole game change.

P.S. Work on a villan post-Armada around now. The clockworks will meet their end rather soon, if world-to-villan logic keeps on going.
