ooc: I don't mind at all. I welcome another voice to the story. This seems to be a long dark night, with much going on in the very late night hours. I didn't know whose ship the poor guinea pig would wind up on. I thought it could be Calamity's or Donna's ship. I'm glad the poor little guy found a berth on your ship. I hope to run into you in Mooshu, if I can ever get out of Padova's sewers.
I certainly plan to go to Mooshu, if I can gather my errant crewmen before the Armada, that is.

As Calamity and her small squad continued through the tunnels, they heard the echo of lovely piano and organ music echoing through the sewers. The down side was, it made it harder to hear anyone else who might be in the sewers ahead of them. They came to a flooded section of the sewers, filled with contents better left unmentioned. Forced to wade, they rejoiced when they returned to a section with dry walks at the side of the tunnel. They were able to follow the squishy wet footprints of Kenneth, topped by the footprints of a rat who must be following him. Sarah said, "We're getting close, these tracks are recent."

As she left the docks, Esperanza paused under a sputtering streetlamp. She pulled out from her waistcoat pocket a slim book. Emblazoned on it's handsome leather cover was the title: Prof. P. Fogg's Phrase Book and Guide to the Spiral. Thumbing rapidly to the back, she located a map of Padova. Checking the directions, she nodded, and refolded the map ( not without some difficulty, and a few emprecations on mapmakers ) and proceeded on her way into the town.

OOC: Love the tribute to Jules Verne. Every pirate could use a copy of Prof. Fogg's book.

Ooc: thanks, but I was just wondering how my pirate would speak the little bit of Valencian she's using, I was thinking of doing a tribute to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but decided on this instead, also I did read quite a lot of Verne in High School. I remember how I cracked up my French teacher by the way I mispronounced Passepartout's name " passy part out!"

Yes, I too loved the playful reference to Around the World in 80 Days.

Walking warily and keeping to the shadows, Esperanza left the suburbs behind and soon came upon a wide plaza. From The Guide, she realized she was in the 'Plaza of the Bakers'. But instead of people stoking ovens and preparing for baking, she saw the remains of a good old-fashioned pie fight. One eye brow cocked up and a mischievous grin crossed her face. ( I would've liked to have seen this, ) she thought.

"Suuuuurrrendeeerrrr... ooorrrrr... diiieee." an eerie voice drawled out, dampening her amusement.

She whirled around and drew her sabre. There, propped against a wall, she saw a clockwork musketeer. He was plastered with meringue; and as she watched, with a few fizzing sparks, he 'died'.

( Not a good place to be found by the Armada; standing over a decommissioned soldier. Best keep moving ) was her thought.

She was gaining on her objective. The 'Ridotto' or casino was a block away from the Doge's Palace. Soon she would be united with her AWOL crewmen.

"Boy, are they in for it." she muttered.

After crossing several dimly lit avenues, Esperanza saw the glow of many illuminations. She entered the plaza in front of the Doge's Palace. The plaza was crowded by sedan chairs and carriages, there was also a Mooshu rickshaw. Even a clockwork carriage!
Any noble attending the ball at the palace arrived by transport, walking was 'vulgar'. Usually the servants would be waiting for their masters with their carriages, ready to take them home after the splendid event. But not tonight. To her horror, she saw that a corps of Armada soldiers had rounded up the servants and were holding them under watch. It was too late to retreat and find an alternate route. She had been noticed.

"Halt!" an order was issued by an Armada officer. His musketeers raised and leveled their sparkshooters at her.
"Come forward, do not try to run." he said.
She had no choice. Putting an unconcerned expression on her face, Esperanza strode toward the officer.

The Armada officer scanned Esperanza coldly, "Your papers." he demanded and stuck out his hand.
A memory of her acting troupe entered her mind, she remembered her dear mentor, Ichero, portraying the noble hero-scholar in popular dramas. How he would place his hand on his katana, pop open a fan and sneer at the hapless underling who would dare interfere with him.

(Well I don't have a fan and maybe placing a hand on my sword would not be politic, but I certainly can sneer. ) she thought.

With a very haughty expression, that plainly conveyed her contempt; even to a lowly machine. Esperanza gave him her papers. He took and examined them, if a clockwork could express surprise, this one came close.

"You are... a citizen of Aquila?" he inquired.

"I am. My patron is the noble Crassus Beakimus." she replied.

"Aquila is a neutral nation. What is your business in Padova?"

"I'm a merchant, the winds have set fair for sailing, and I must gather my crew before I can depart." she explained.

"You may pass." he returned her papers and turned away.

A sudden idea occurred to Esperanza.

"One moment, Captain, I would like to have an escort. The night is late and thieves are about. The reputation of the Armada is known far and wide. A favor to a citizen of Aquila, will surely redound to your credit."

He turned to his troops, "You, Custos, take two Marines and a Musketeer and escort the Merchant to her crewmen, return when you have finished this task."

The Custos officer and the escort detail fell into line and followed Esperanza.

Walking through the dark streets with Armada clockworks at her side, Esperanza was forced to think about her situation. When had she ever been this close to her sworn enemies, without being threatened with capture or death? The clockworks kept up a steady pace and it took all of her agility to keep up Fortunately they had not far to travel and the garish lights of the casino were just ahead.

Coming to the front steps, she turned to her escort and said, "There is no need for you to follow me inside, you may wait here."

The Custos replied, "We are to escort you to your crewmen, there will be no derivation from these orders."

Esperanza shrugged and entered the casino. The casino ( or Ridotto as it was called in Valencia ) was crowded by citizens of all ranks and species. The ones closest to the door turned aghast at the sight of Armada soldiers entering their supposed place of refuge. Some began a slow sidle toward a back entrance.

Esperanza stopped a waiter and asked, "Have you seen a Weasel and a Horse here tonight?"

She felt a tap on her shoulder, she turned and found herself eyeball to belt buckle. She took a step back and looked up. A female Cyclopes was glaring at her. She was fierce and elegant at the same time, wearing a lavender silk tunic and golden jewelry, she was armed with a pair of daggers the size of short swords and a massive cudgel.

"We have two customers who fit that description in the private offices of Signor Vittelli, are you their captain?" she asked in a gravelly alto voice. On receiving a nod, she gestured, "Follow me."

Ooc: Calamity, will you be moving this roleplay to Central or do you think we can wrap it up before April 29? Then begin a new roleplay where we go to Mooshu.

In the middle of an especially convoluted part of the sewers, the tracks of the rat tracking Kenneth diverged and went off in another direction. Calamity's crew continued tracking Kenneth. Lt. Springer said, "He's close, we should be right on top of him. I don't understand it."
Kenneth swung down out of the niche of piping above their heads. "Hi Captain!"
Mustang Sally gave a leap that almost brushed the ceiling, and the others gasped in surprise. 'Good to see you, Kenneth. Now that we've found you, we need to get back to the ship and out of Valencia."
They headed to the nearest ladder to the street, making a brief stop at a fountain spraying over the cobblestones of a plaza to rinse off the worst of the sewer muck. Kenneth told them on the way to the ship about his bounty hunting "friends".
When they finally arrived at the ship, Bonnie greeted them, "Hello Captain, we have a new would-be crew member aboard...what's that smell?"
"Never mind the smell. Whoever that applicant is, hope the person is good because we'll be stuck with them for at least one cruise. We are setting sail for Mooshu immediately. Make it so."
"Aye, Captain," Bonnie said and began giving orders to cast off.
Calamity thought, if the new crew member doesn't work out, I hope they like Mooshu food, because they will be eating a lot of it.

Following the Cyclopes and with the Armada escort in tow, Esperanza's party cut a wide swath through the crowded casino. The Cyclopes led them through a back door into a tastefully decorated office. The color scheme was black and white with touches of a soothing blue-gray color. Standing behind the desk was a Crab. Sitting near the desk were Esperanza's missing crewmen, they didn't look very happy to see her.

The Cyclopes said, "Signor Vitelli, this is the captain, I was sent to find."

Signor Vitelli, "Thank you, Psyche, now search her."

The Armada soldiers raised their weapons. The officer said, "This Merchant is under the protection of the Armada, any interference with our mission will be considered an attack upon the Armada. This is your only warning."

Growlin' Clyde and the Toreador leaped out of their seats. Clyde began,"Captain, how did you get here and with..."

"Silence Mr. Nelson! We will be leaving now with these ...gentlemen. And hopefully be saying good bye to Padova. I will be speaking to you about your behavior later."

Esperanza turned to Signor Vitelli, "Signor, as an owner of a casino, you know there are times when you must cut your losses."

So with no further ado, they left the casino. As they got to the entrance, the Custos said, "You are reunited with your crewmen, our orders are completed, we will leave now."
As they marched off into the darkness, Esperanza was not the only one to sigh in relief.

Making tracks by the shortest, yet most discrete route available, they got to the docks without further incident.
Esperanza was able to hail a gondola to take them out to where the Avenging Siren lay at anchor.

As she boarded, she began issuing orders, "Weigh anchor, unfurl the main! We're leaving now!"

She turned to Birgus,"Mr. Latro you have the helm, it's been a long day, and an even longer night. I need rest."

And she retired to her cabin.

Meanwhile back at the casino, a very irate Crab was also issuing orders.

"Find out everything you can about that captain, where she comes from. NOBODY welches on a dept to Benito Vittelli, without payment in gold or blood"

Esperanza slept deeply and dreamlessly, without a worry in the world ( or so she thought ). So deep in sleep was she that the transition through the stormgate didn't disturb her. When she woke it was midday and the ship was resting at anchor in Monquistan skies. She dressed and came on deck. She saw Samocles at the watch station.

"Hey-Ho, Sammy, how goes the day?" she asked.

"Very well, Captain." was his reply.

Salty Ned approached with a tankard of yum with a chunk of cheese and bread. She gratefully accepted her breakfast, as she chewed, Birgus came on deck. He walked up to her.

"How is the ship, Birgus?"

"Our 'guest' didn't weather the stormgate very well, Cap'n. Itzen had to heal him," he continued at her exclamation of concern. "Nothing serious, he just banged his head against the bulkhead."

"Well, I'll need to speak to him later. For now, I want you to pipe all hands on deck."

When the crew had assembled, Esperanza addressed them. "Mr. Nelson and the Toreador, step forward."
She looked sternly on her erring crewmen, "Mr. Nelson, would you explain yourself?"

"I didn't mean no harm, Captain. y'see Salty Ned told me that Padova had a famous Casino, and I just wanted to try my luck. At first we was winning, but then our luck turned. Then I was dealt a great hand, and that signor Vitelli raised the stakes and I didn't have anything to cover it....so.... I bet ... the ship." he cringed in anticipation to her reaction.

"YOU BET THE SHIP!"

The entire crew gasped, and took a step back. Surely there would be bloodshed. Esperanza took a deep breath.

"All shore leave for you and The Toreador is cancelled until further notice, You are to stand double watches for one week, AND today you will be scraping barnacles from the hull." she turned to Birgus, " Get the gear out." She walked toward her cabin, "And send Mr. Launcetto to me."

A knock sounded on her cabin door. Itzen Kaan entered and croaked, "Mr. Launcetto to see you, Ma'am."

The Guinea Pig entered, and was invited to sit. Esperanza looked at him, he seemed more cheerful this morning, despite the bandage wrapping his brow.

"I want to thank you, Capitana, for your generousity to a stranger." he gave her a courtly bow, then sat.

"You're welcome, signor, but now we have to discuss your future. You can't stay here as a crew member, I don't think you are suited to the life. However, I have been informed that you are a clerk?"

When he had indicated that this was so, she continued. "I have a proposition to make, there is a business associate who would have need of a clerk with knowledge of Valencian business practice, as well as someone conversant in the language. I'm informing you right now, he lives in Jonah Town, which is in Skull Island skyway."

She waited as he made the connection, his eyes grew wide. "Yes, Mr. Launcetto, you are among pirates." she gave him a huge grin.

"Am I being kidnapped to be sold to this business associate?" he asked nervously.

( The cowardly swine. Definitely not pirate material ) she thought "Not at all sir. If you wish we can go to the closest port and you can make your way from there."

"Pardone Capitana, that was rude of me, please excuse it. I have a cousin in the ship fuel business, in Hamamitsu, if you would be so kind, if you are going that way, I mean...' he stuttered to a stop.

"As a matter of fact I AM going to Mooshu and will be glad to transport you there and out of the hands of the Armada. So 'tis settled, Mr. Launcetto, good luck with the future!"

( ooc, now I have finished my part of this roleplay, see you guys in Mooshu!)

ooc: Gasp! He bet the SHIP?! Great plot twist!
I'd like to continue the story and save Kenneth from his curse. RIght now, I'm waiting to see if there are any changes with this new roleplay policy. If the ban is temporary, I'd rather continue here. There may have been a surge, with the vacations this time of year. I posted a suggestion to make Yarn Spinners a new board category, separate from the Tavern. If they get swamped, they could post it last, post it with more lag, or maybe put a "posting to stories" limit. I know I like to let the story cook (post and wait to see what others have added). I'm hoping they let us do it here again.
If I decide to switch it to Central, I'll post the details here.
I also want to continue the Donna Danielle's story, on the ship with her love and the poor crazy monkey doesn't even know it.

Thank you very much for your kind words and yars! But we were only building on the wonderful, entrancing and thrilling story started by Virtuous Anne Radcliffe, Sam Underhill ( I have enjoyed your story in Fan Fiction, Sam and am looking forward to the continuation! ) and Numerous others who have joined in. This was my first roleplay and I have enjoyed it!
