Everyone arrived safely in Adrift, with no monsters, demons, shadow beasts, sneaky thieves, giant lake monsters or multi-legged dragons with four eyes and four wings.
“I do sincerely hope that’s the last monster we have to deal with right now,” Clyde complained. “I am not going to deal with another creature-and I really don’t want it to be evil.”
“Relax, that dragon was created by Sirius, and he was only doing his job,” Travis said. “Besides, if we do him a favor and fix the Stoneship Age, he’ll give us an awesome, ultra-rare weapon that you can’t find anywhere else. What is not cool about that?”
“You’re right-I do want to try out that weapon,” Clyde meowed, his eyes filled with wonder. “I wonder what it is. A giant gun? A sword that can summon meteors or some other awesome thing?”
“That all depends on what Eliza can do,” Madeline pointed out. “Eliza, this is a large weight on your shoulders; you sure you can handle it?”
“I’m pretty positive,” Eliza answered. “Not that we have all the pages, it should be easier with some help from Sirius. I wonder if he could summon help, like a powerful creature to aid us in our fight.”
“Who knows anyway…” Andrew said. “I’ll race you guys to Lió!”
“No fair man, no fair!” Clyde yelled, running after him.
While the two fought each other and wrestled, Travis, Madeline, and Eliza walked up to the gazebo where Lió was standing, staring out at the bullet-shaped ship. When they approached, she turned to them and smiled.
“You’ve come back safe and sound! I had been worried for a bit, but it seems you’ve made it back without a scratch,” she said. “So, do you have the pages?”
“Yeah, we’ve got them-and we almost got eaten by a giant demon dragon,” Eliza grumbled. “Do you know Demongania personally?”
“Not entirely-he did give Kironos the ability to defeat Aero Noctis,” Lió added. “But now that we have all of the pages, Sirius is bound to speak to us. Finally-the master will come home again!”
They handed the pages to Lió, and she walked into the main building. They followed her inside and gathered around as she removed the red and blue Adrift machine books from their shelf.
“I am so excited!” Lió exclaimed. “It’s been so long-and I’m sure Sirius would be feeling the same way right now. I wonder if he even knows about what’s going to happen.”
“Maybe he does know,” Andrew said. “Maybe he knew all along, like he’s some kind of mind-reader, and he’s kept it secret up until now.”
“That’s a pretty good hypothesis,” Travis complimented.
“Thank you, I was inspired by trains,” Andrew answered.
“What do trains have to do with any of this?” Clyde asked with an annoyed tone in his voice.
“If you three do not mind, I am going to use the books now,” Lió said. The others shut up as she flipped open the covers and immediately inserted the pages into the visor one-by-one. Both books fizzled and suddenly merged together, becoming half red and half blue.
“That’s certainly not something that happens every day,” Madeline commented. “So what is to happen now?”
“Just wait…it’s powering up,” Lió whispered. The book’s visor lit up, and in an instant Sirius’s face appeared on the screen.
“Sirius-it’s you!” Lió exclaimed happily. “They’ve done it-your heroes-they’ve saved Adrift! You can come back!”
“I-I cannot see you…bring me…bring me…FZZZT!!!”
The book caught fire, and Lió cried out. She ran outside over to the water-turbulent pool and threw the book into the water. It sparked with electricity, and then it went dark, all of the color drained out.
Lió stood stock-still, a blank expression on her face. “I…I failed…the book-it’s gone. I failed Sirius…I failed all of you…”
She broke down in tears, silently sobbing. Eliza and Travis helped to her feet, and she wiped her eyes. “I-I am so sorry,” she sniffed.
“It’s ok Lió, it’s not your fault,” Eliza said. “There was something wrong with the book. You did your best.”
Andrew, who had looked away in sadness suddenly perked up. “Hey, there’s still one last marker switch that hasn’t been flipped!” he cried. He ran over and examined it.
“So what? That thing won’t help us now,” Clyde growled. “Sirius isn’t coming back.”
Andrew stuck his tongue out at Clyde and flipped the switch. There was a deep rumbling, and then a bright flash that knocked everyone down.
“What the heck just happened?!” Clyde shouted, a little terrified.
Andrew stood up and turned towards the dock, and then gasped. “Uh guys, where’s the ship?”
Everyone else got up and looked at where he was pointing, and indeed the Adventurer’s Transport was missing. There wasn’t any trace of where the ship went, not a single piece of wood or anything.
“Oh no, are we marooned here?!” Madeline cried as everyone raced to the docks.
“I guess we are marooned,” Lió moaned. “This is certainly not a good day.”
Eliza noticed something at the edge of the docks and knelt down to pick it up. It looked like a piece of paper, and there was something written on it.
