The Toymaker (Chapter IX) by Nimble Ginelle Quinn

Chapter nine: in which Danielle has a nightmare, the students learn their first power, and Harrison and Brie try to save the students from a ninja attack

Danielle screamed as the shadow men bounded off the walls of the dark alleyway after her, every so often grabbing at her elegant ball gown before tumbling onto the ground. She had no idea why she was wearing the red dress with long gloves, or why she was in an alleyway, or why she was even being chased, but one thing was for certain-the shadow men weren’t going to stop.

The alleyway was practically infinite; there was no end to the barrels of rope propped against the buildings and the boarded up windows cloaked in shadow. Danielle wished she wasn’t wearing such a nice dress at a time like this, because she would often trip over the train of her gown and almost get snatched by a shadow man’s long claws.

She eventually found an open door and closed it behind her, leaving the shadow men outside. Apparently they didn’t bother to go after her, instead staying outside. She carefully snuck through the dark room until suddenly a mysterious light switched on.

A Sage stepped into the light, and for a moment Danielle felt like running up and hugging him, thinking he was Navajo Redd.

“Navajo, is that you?” Danielle asked, shielding her eyes as two other men stepped into the light and came towards her.

The two men were actually two of the shadow men. Danielle screamed and tried to open the door behind her, but once it was opened more shadow men flooded in. They surrounded Danielle and grabbed her hands, holding her arms behind her back. They led her over to the sage, who was smiling evilly.

When Danielle saw the sage’s face, she gasped. He wasn’t Navajo at all; he had a large scar over his right eye and his face was a bit longer. The man’s metallic spikes were also longer, and his right eye was red, probably because of the scar.

“Put her with her brother and the rest of the students,” the man said. “Bound her hands and cover her mouth; we need the children to be quiet.”

“Yes General Slaughter!” the shadow men answered. They bound Danielle’s hands and covered her mouth with rope, and then led her over to a wall, where they had the other students bound up and propped against the wall. Desmond struggled and tried to say something, but the sash tied around his mouth kept him from saying everything.

Danielle tried to scream, but the men put her against the wall next to her brother. They took out a vial of green liquid and a medical needle. The first man put the liquid in the needle, and the second man took the needle from him. The man approached Danielle, and Danielle freaked out as he inserted the needle into her arm.

Danielle jolted upright, her face rather pale and her golden eyes watery with fear. She felt her forehead, which was sweaty, and sighed with relief. “It-it was only a dream…” she breathed, settling back down in bed, but was too frightened to fall back asleep.

It was still night outside, probably 4 o’clock in the morning. She jerked a bit when she heard the door to the cabin creak open slowly, but calmed down when she saw that it was only Brie.

“Are you alright Danielle?” Brie asked, coming over to her bed. “I left you alone for a bit when I saw you having a nightmare-or night terror, whichever one it was. I just came back now, and now you’re awake, looking like you’ve been attacked.”

“I’m…fine, no need to worry,” Danielle lied. “Well…ok, I’m not fine at all. I had this nightmare-or night terror, to be precise-about the ninjas…and I saw who their leader was! His name is General Slaughter, and they had all of us bound up!”

Brie put a paw on her shoulder. “You should be safe here, and besides: it was only a dream. Get your rest, and I’ll let Navajo know about General Slaughter.” She gently pulled the covers over Danielle and patted her head, and then left the cabin.

“…Only a dream…I guess that’s all, then,” Danielle mumbled, going back to sleep.
The next morning, Desmond literally jumped out of bed, landing on his feet. He was pretending to sleep so he could impress Creole and Samson, convincing them that jumping out of bed is how he always wakes up. Apparently though, everyone was already dressed, sitting on their beds and looking over at him before breaking into laughter.

“How did you guys wake up before me?” Desmond asked, looking at the others in confusion.

“We could hear you snickering, and we were already awake at that time,” Creole explained. “You should be quieter.”

Desmond glowered and stomped over to the dressing room, deeply embarrassed.
Desmond dressed himself in a nice vest and short-sleeved white shirt and shorts that were a dark forest green. It would be a hot summer day, even though it was night outside. Just because the sun doesn’t shine doesn’t mean that it would be cold outside.

He put on a flat cap and headed out the door, ready to learn his first spell of the day. He saw his twin Danielle wearing a simple red sundress. Something about her outfit seemed a tiny bit familiar.

Navajo approached the group of students with a smile on his face. “Welcome students, I see you are all dressed appropriately today, due to high temperatures. I will take you to town square for your first lesson today, so follow me.”

Sumatra came over to Danielle’s side and smiled. “Your sundress is very beautiful,” she commented.

Navajo led the group into the town square, and he sat down on the edge of the fountain. He took out a thick but small book from within his robe and flipped it open to a marked page.

“Gather around my students, we will begin your first lesson,” Navajo announced. He shifted in place and faced the group of children. “Today, you will learn how to create a ball of light, and how to fire it from your hand for long distances. You’ve got to learn this before anything else, especially before summoning your immortal matrix.”

He demonstrated my holding out his palm, and focusing his eyes on the center of his palm a ball of white light formed. He then stood up and fired the ball of light at an empty cart, and the cart shattered into a million pieces. A shop owner nearby yelped with surprise and ran away, frightened.

“That was totally awesome!!!” Samson howled. “Can I learn how to do that?” His tail was wagging with pure excitement.

“Of course you can, my boy,” Navajo replied. “Go ahead and hold out your palm.”

Samson did just that, focusing on his palm. “So, what do I do next?”

“Focus on the center of your palm and focus only on it. The energy that you use for your attention will be drawn through your nerves and to your palm. When your palm feels prickly, you can lose focus, and the energy will appear in your hand, and then you can fire it at enemies or objects by thrusting your hand forward a bit.”

Suddenly, a weak little ball of light fizzed in Samson’s hand. Samson laughed and turned towards the already-destroyed-cart, and he fired the ball of light at it. The cart exploded even more, and the pieces went everywhere, some landing on Danielle and Desmond’s heads.

“That was amazing!” Danielle exclaimed happily. “It seems really easy to do, right?”

“It is really easy-and totally fun!” Samson laughed. “The rest of you should try it!”

Everyone held out their palms and summoned their own light, and they fired the light at random objects. Everyone except Sumatra, who was having difficulty keeping the ball of light in her hand long enough to control it.

Navajo came to his daughter’s aid and took ahold of her wrist, lifting her hand up. “Hold your hand higher, and keep as much focus as you can on your palm,” he told her with a smile. The ball of light formed in her palm and Sumatra and grinned as it shined in her face.

“Now, try and fire the light at Creole,” Navajo whispered slyly.

Sumatra raised her hand and pointed it at Creole, who was running around and firing light from his pointer finger at Samson, who was firing from his finger at Creole. When Creole stopped and hid behind the broken cart, Sumatra fired her light.

The light hit Creole’s arm, and he jolted up. “Who did that?!” he exclaimed.

Sumatra and Navajo laughed, and Creole frowned. Danielle and Desmond came over and patted Sumatra on her back, congratulating her while Samson laughed at Creole.

“Very funny Sumatra, only that wasn’t funny at all!” Creole grumbled, looking at her with a smile. “Good job anyway, but just don’t attack me, ok?”

“Maybe, but I might get you later on,” Sumatra teased him.

Suddenly, Harrison came bounding towards the group. Some of the children screamed in fright and Navajo jumped in front of the group. Danielle and Desmond stepped out from behind him and ran over to Harrison.

“Children, get away from that beast!” Navajo growled. “He’s the Hangman, and he’ll attack you if you get too close!”

“No he won’t because he’s our friend! We know him; his name is Harrison, and he’s not an evil monster,” Danielle said. She turned to the tired creature. “What’s the matter Harrison?”

“The ninjas-those rebels-they’re going to kidnap you guys!” Harrison cried. “I saw them take Richard during the night, when I was racing towards the town. They’re coming into town…they-they will capture you all, especially Navajo’s daughter!” Harrison pointed at Sumatra, who gasped with fear.

Suddenly, ninjas jumped from every rooftop in town, springing down onto the ground and surrounding the group.

Two ninjas jumped down and landed on Harrison, and the beast snarled and thrashed, trying to throw them off.

A gang of nine ninjas surrounded the children, keeping them huddled together in fear. Navajo lifted up his hand and shot balls of light at approaching ninjas, sending them flying backwards, and then he turned to the huddled group.

“Use your powers against the enemy like I taught you!” he yelled before sending another ninja flying.

Creole and Samson fired away, but no matter how many ninjas were knocked down, only more and more would come after them. The enemy’s number became too great, and within seconds the children had their hands bound behind their backs.

“Raaa, get off of them!!!” a voice snarled. Rays of blue light flew out of nowhere and hit the ninjas, knocking them down. Brie jumped from the smoke, her brown eyes sparking with blue light.

Harrison roared and wrestled himself free from two of the ninjas’ grasp, and he bounded over to the children. He slashed at the ropes on their hands, setting them free.

“Head to the mountain!” Navajo cried as the ninjas began to swarm him. “Keep to the trees, and stay alert. Before he could be overwhelmed, he tossed his book to the children. “Stay safe, and stick together!”
