Rogue's Gallery: Fan Flanders

Welcome to the Pirate101 Rogue’s Gallery. Subject, Fan Flanders.

Fan Flanders was born to a small farm on Webston’s Island, one of the many small Islets that dot the skyways of Marleybone. The Flanders were tenant farmers and led a hard life, one made even worse when the Lord Baron Bufo of the Island sold their farm from under them in order to cover a gambling debt.

Broke, the Flanders moved to the coastal town of Cramshire to live with relatives. Fan and her sisters grew up in the crime ridden slum of Frogbottom. After her parents were sent to debtor’s prison Fan became the only source of income for her siblings – first by selling sky clams, then flowers... and then by becoming one of the best pickpockets n Frogbottom.

As time went on Fan graduated from picking pockets to becoming a cutpurse of uncommon skill and later still the best frog burglar (like a cat burglar but quicker on the bounce) in Cramshire. And each “job” she pulled helped her get her sisters a little farther away from Frogbottom.

Alas, no thief’s luck lasts forever. Both of Fan’s sisters had been married off to likely lads when she saw an opportunity to enact revenge for her poor parents – a chance to steal the signet ring of the Lord Baron Bufo himself – but just as she approached the safe that held the ring the lights came on and she was apprehended by the City Watch.

Fan was consigned to Newgate Prison but soon broke out, swearing Vengeance on Baron Bufo. She bought passage on a Wharf Rat ship bound for Skull Island. Once there she sought out Morgan LaFitte, an old acquaintance from when Fan first became a burglar. Upon hearing her tale a woe, Morgan made a fateful suggestion: Why not take up Piracy?

Books for the Cultured Pirate

Ahh, Pirate friends! Welcome back! The book I have to share with you today will have you thinking that sometimes good things just drop right out of the skyway and into your lap!

Nick and his dad and brother have just moved to a new house, and he's not feeling very confident about starting a new middle school - and that's *before* he gets hit in the head with a weird toaster that falls down from the attic.

In fact, the attic is so full of weird stuff that Nick decides to make some money by selling it at a garage sale. But it's when people buy the stuff and take it home that things get really freaky. Tape recorders that record what you say, but play back what you were thinking? A See and Say that predicts the future? Nick and the kids who bought stuff from him will have a lot to figure out, especially if they want to stay away from the creepy secret society that wants the stuff for themselves.

It's all in Tesla's Attic, by Neal Shusterman. If you like that book, read the sequel, Edison's Alley, to find out what happens next!

The Hidden Hybrids in Pirate101

There’s a newly discovered hybrid in Pirate101 thanks to our friend Decius Duelmaster and a very clever pirate named Brave Sam Laveer. He pieced together hints from Decius to discover a Coconut Crawlie plus another Coconut Crawlie can sometimes have a unique outcome! Go read about it on our official Pirate101 Forums here.

Vadima's Visions: What is the rarest ship horn?

Hello my pirate friends! I see you have come before me again, seeking wisdom. This month our question comes from “Quite Jacques” on the official Pirate101 Message Boards. Jacques asks, “Has any horn never been used and if not which is the rarest horn (ships)?” A very perplexing question about ship horns indeed! A ship’s horn is its conduit to the magic of the Spiral and many battles can be won or lost based on the quality of a ship’s powerful horn. Also . . . you can use it to honk at your friends when you pass them in a windlane . . . ahem. Let us peer into Vadima’s magical ball and see what information we can find about this powerful piece of ship equipment.

I see a very dangerous place in the spiral: a foreboding turret in Marleybone in a far off corner of the Spiral. I see very few pirates obtaining a special horn called the “Fulminate Horn.” I see that it is ten times rarer than the Horn of Ra or the Horn of the Great Serpent. Yes, this is a very powerful piece of ship equipment indeed and will serve pirates well in the future. Perhaps they simply do not know of this items existence? Perplexing indeed!

The vision fades . . . until next time my Pirate students . . . see you on the message boards.
