Zone of the Month: Scrimshaw

null

With our previous newsletters we talked a lot about the diverse characters in the game. Now we want to explore the zones you all know and love! We started this new spotlight with covering the ever-popular central hub of Skull Island, and now this month we're journeying forth onward to Scrimshaw!

Name:

Scrimshaw

Location:

Scrimshaw is on a large island in Tradewinds skyway, in the world of Skull Island.

Description:

The most infamous port in Skull Island, Scrimshaw is built inside the skeleton of a gargantuan Leviathan. The city takes its name from the carvings its inhabitants have made in all the parts of the bones they can reach. A haven for smugglers, pirates, and all manner of villains, Scrimshaw is the place exiles from Skull Island or Flotsam end up. Wharf Rat gangs and crews rule the city, vying with each other constantly for control of the black market that flourishes here. It’s said one can find anything in the back rooms and dark alleys of Scrimshaw, but it’s also said that many who visit never return…

Secrets:

The wreckage of the Pequod, the poor ship the Leviathan was chasing when it crashed into the island, is still cradled in the beast’s skeletal jaws.

Don’t Miss This Side Quest!!

It’s not technically a side quest, but Sarah Steele’s promotion quest Curse of the Black Pearl makes a memorable stop in Scrimshaw, where the Pirate tussles with a gang of wharf rats and their nefarious leader, Mick Dagger.

Who’s That Boss?

Nim, leader of a nasty gang of rats that bears his name, lives in the drains and sewers under the city.

Behind the Dev Process:

As Skull Island was being first visualized, we knew we needed a wretched hive of scum and villainy, a pirate haven darker than players’ main base at Skull Island. The initial concept drawing of the massive skeleton clinched it – this would be the place. As far as references go, Scrimshaw is replete with them: The wreck of the Pequod and its destruction by a leviathan are of course allusions to Moby Dick. The Rats of Nim, Nim’s gang, is an allusion to Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (or the film The Secret of NIMH). Mick Dagger, of course, is a nod to one of the greatest rock stars of all time.
