It's currency and allows you to buy certain items in the Black Market and Brawlin' Hall.

Generally, you can by items from the black market, and one of the ranked PVP arenas. Glad to help.

You may also sell scrip for lots of gold, but obviously I forgot where to do that at.

Wrong, there is no way to transfer scrip to gold.

Brawlin hall is right next to the path downwards in skull island. Not Avery's court. But the other area

The Black Market can be found in the building where the bazaar is - go to the right where you'll see many crates, the door to the black market is concealed behind the crates.
Brawlin' Hall is in the large building flying a skull flag from the roof.
Both these places can be found through questing, try talking to the pelican in Avery's Court.
