Can't redeem gifts

I can't redeem any gifts on pirate101. It keeps saying "Gift failed to redeem". Why?

Ahoy!

If you are unable to redeem gifts, try logging out to the character screen, switching characters and then switching back. This should help you be able to redeem the gifts.
