Epic confusion

Hi :)

I have a question about the new level 15, 35, and 55 epics champions receive. My question is if I buy a champion from the crown shop at let's say level 40, will my companion be short 2 epics since it didn't level through 15 and 35? Most probably understand this and think I am dumb for not knowing, but I just don't know.
