have there been any big updates i've missed since late 2015, since i haven't posted here for a long time? (~2 years)

Do you know about the Pirate's Regatta? That and ranked pvp were added in Aug 2015. You have missed the return to Valencia, for the second half of that world. Also there is a rogue dreadnaught that sometimes attacks Skull Island. The details can be found above, in the news tab, under update notes.

Valencia Part 2 was released, that was the biggest update.
