The Aerodynamic Age was just like what Eliza had read about-half of the town was buildings, while the other half was made up of giant gears, including the buildings. The entire town was levitating in the air-in fact, the entire island was a huge machine. It kind of reminded Eliza of stories that her father would tell her about the Armada fortresses, and how they could maneuver their forts through the Spiral to specific destinations, often to places they would try to control. Could the Aerodynamics town travel through the Spiral like the Armada fortresses?
“This place is so cool!” Andrew exclaimed. “I wonder where the pages are.”
“Well, we haven’t had any sleep back over in Soaan, so I guess we could go investigate now,” Travis suggested. “But I am seriously tired from all of this, so I would like to take a nap sometime soon, ok?”
“Naps are for wimps,” Clyde laughed, running past the others. “Last person to find a page is a loser!”
“Hey, I don’t want to be a loser!!!” Andrew cried, running after him furiously.
“I’m no quitter either!” Madeline shouted, racing ahead.
Travis sighed loudly. “Glad I’m 24 and not 14. I think I’ll go investigate some of the houses in the normal part of town. Why don’t you go to the gear part? Maybe you’ll find something interesting.”
He headed off in the opposite direction, and Eliza walked towards the gear section of town. The gears were large and made of many different kinds of metal, like brass, copper, silver, iron, and even gold. The buildings were made of gears, the streets were made of gears, and even the streetlamps were made of gears. There were so many gears, it freaked Eliza out a bit.
She decided to enter the nearest building, which was a small cottage-made of gears. The inside was rather large , but there were little furniture, so Eliza didn’t have much to search through. Something about the room seemed unnatural, as if something terrible happened here.
“I ought to go search the drawers over there,” Eliza mumbled to herself. “Seems like a pretty good place to start.”
She walked over to the dresser and pulled out each drawer one at a time. So far, there was nothing of interest, just dust and a few pieces of string.
When she reached the last drawer, there was half of a torn page. The words were blurred, possibly because of water or age, or maybe even the dust-if dust could cause words to become blurry.
Eliza picked up the page and brushed off the dust and tried to read what little words were legible:
Please-whoever finds this-get help-Aero-has taken over-shadows-kidnapping people-get help soon-few survivors-abandoned-Adrift in danger-Lió is in danger-save yourself-
“What is going on-’’ Eliza was about to say before something cold and metallic gently slid around her throat. Someone’s hand covered her mouth and muffled her scream.
“Don’t make any sound,” a voice hissed in her ear. “I know exactly why you’re here-I saw what your friends are up to, and I know what you want. But now that you’ve read that page, I’ll let you in on a little secret…”
The cold metal thing slid away, and Eliza saw that it was a knife. The owner of the knife put it away inside his vest pocket, and as he stepped out of the shadows, Eliza saw he was a Nocmur, like Lió. He had silver-gray fur, a black-and-white ringed tail, brown ears, and brown bat wings attached to his arms and waist. He wore a vest, a flat cap, leather pants, and black boots, and he had a secret pouch where he hid his knife.
“My name is Kironos,” the Nocmur said silently. “I know you want the red and blue pages that are hidden here, but even if I hand them over you’ll still be in danger. I was one of the best thieves here in Aerodynamic, but then came the attacks…”
“Wait, what are you talking about?” Eliza asked.
“Keep your voice down, you want the others to hear?!” Kironos snarled, flashing his knife at Eliza. “Anyway, the attacks were caused by shadow beings, evil minions of Aero Noctis. Aero Noctis was one of the last of the Black ship pirates, and when his companions were defeated by Sirius and the people in the Stoneship Age, he grew mad-extremely mad. His fury filled him with a dark magic more powerful than any of the other tricks that the shadow pirates could pull off, and he took over the other worlds in a matter of days.”
“What happened after that?” Eliza asked.
“When he took over Aerodynamic, he decided to hold Lió hostage as ransom, so he could get revenge on Sirius, but she refused,” Kironos explained. “He then had her kidnapped and brought aboard his ship, and Sirius couldn’t do a thing about it. Aero Noctis grew too powerful for Sirius, and the Art had no effect on him. But that’s when I came in-my master thief skills made me too fast for the shadowy pirate to handle, and within half an hour, I defeated him. My biggest mistake was that I let him live; now he’s coming back, and I fear he will try to capture Lió again.”
“So, what should I do? If the Art doesn’t work on Aero Noctis, how could I defeat him?” Eliza asked. “I want Lió to be safe as well as you do, but how could I keep her away from that bad guy?”
“Lió can protect herself-it’s you and your friends I’m worried about,” Kironos said simply. “I kept Lió safe and gained Sirius’s trust, but even he didn’t know how he could keep his future heroes safe. Whatever happens, stay away from the shadows, and keep Lió away from them as well.”
He handed over the red and blue page, and then tipped his hat to her. “Tell Lió that I miss her, and give this to her also,” he said. He gave Eliza a letter and a rose, and then he left the house without another word.
Eliza shrugged and walked out of the house, but once she set foot outside she noticed that Kironos had left, possibly flying high in the air towards another part of town.
“Hey Eliza, there you are!” Clyde exclaimed as he and the others ran over to her. “I see you found the forth red and blue pages, but why are you also holding a letter…and a rose?”
Eliza sighed. “I met someone very close to Lió-someone named Kironos. Apparently some evil pirate by the name of Aero Noctis wants revenge on Sirius. He kidnapped Lió, but Kironos saved her. I think he likes her, but won’t come to Adrift probably because he feels it’s not right for him to love Lió with Sirius gone. So, I’ll be bringing Lió this letter and rose.”
“Aww, that has to be the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard!” Madeline said.
“You are a little too obsessed with this romance stuff, are you?” Clyde asked her.
“We all have something that we become obsessed about,” Travis said. “We should go back right now and take these things to Lió, because I feel she and Kironos should be with each other.”
“Well, let’s get going then!” Andrew exclaimed.
“Can do, Andrew, can do,” Eliza answered. She opened the Adrift book and flipped to the last page, set her hand in the symbol, and then they all transported to Adrift. As they disappeared, Kironos smiled and leapt off of the roof of one of the houses and flew away.
Once they got back to Adrift, they handed the pages over to Lió.
“I have great news to tell you!” Lió exclaimed. “I found the other two pages that were hidden in Adrift!”
“That is really great news,” Madeline agreed. “So, Eliza has something to give to you…from an old friend in Aerodynamic.”
“Really? I thought my home had been abandoned,” Lió said. “What do you have to give me, Eliza?”
Eliza handed over the rose and the letter. Lió read the letter quickly, and when she finished, she smiled. “I figured he would write to me,” she whispered. “I feel the exact same way. If you all don’t mind, could you please send this letter back to him by the book? I would love for him to read my response.”
She gave Eliza the page, and Eliza put it on the symbol. When she said “Omniz Veron”, the letter disappeared, teleporting back to the Aerodynamics Age. Hopefully Kironos would find it and read what it says.
“Now that’s been taken care of…” Lió muttered. “I know the last world you need to visit: the Stoneship Age. I must warn you however; the last time I visited that place, I was brought there against my will, and Sirius was terribly distraught. Be careful young masters-there is a dark evil in that place.”
